Amber
The F16s
Deepti had the privilege of creating a music video for The F16s, for the song ‘Amber’ from their EP WKND FRNDS. This was her graduation project at the National Institute of Design, in the year 2018.
WKND FRNDS is a warm weather rock’n’roll record that sustains a midnight mood of loneliness, lost love and tempestuous times possessed by something admirably deranged, pinballing between love and indifference. Amber is a rendition of tranquil chords placed over foreboding lyrics to describe an individual’s frivolous bicker with romance. The cycle consists of three segments divided into three parts in the song- Beginning with refute and denial, followed by relinquish, regret and absolute surrender, but only to resolve itself in the end, making peace with the individual’s identity, and an almost apathetic outcome.
The music video follows a central female character (named Amber) who does not like who she is, and purchases a new head for herself online. The film has been visualized to feel almost like a dream, with the focus shifting from one thing to another almost abruptly, surreal, but with a seamless flow to it. Using visual metaphors, the music video explores themes like the relationship with self, identity, and how the world around you affects how you perceive yourself. The song, being divided into three segments, provided interesting possibilities with the narrative, with the pauses and switching moods helping progress the story visually.
